Young’s has been an independent family business since 1831, when they bought both a brewery and 82 London pubs. Young’s prides itself on being a big, happy (and constantly growing) hospitality family. With a family member always being part of the Youngs team ever since, they have dedicated themselves to establishing ‘proper pubs,’ eventually expanding from their London roots to the rest of the UK.

The Challenge
After a short period of going cashless following the pandemic in 2020, Young’s pubs started accepting cash again, and although profits were good and customers were happy with being able to use cash again, they saw a rise in the number of counterfeit notes entering the business and were keen to find a simple solution that could potentially help all of their pubs.
The Solution
Having just launched a new forgery detector into their range, the Volumatic sales team were contacting existing customers to ask if counterfeit notes were causing them problems.
After speaking to one of Young’s Lead Cashiers at their London head office, Lidia Zywicka, and discovering their ongoing issues with forgeries, Volumatic offered Young’s a free trial of their BV20 SD forgery detector, tested by the Bank of England, which they then decided to trial at their biggest cash-taking site, the Bull’s Head Hotel, in Kent.

The Outcome
The trial at the Bull’s Head Hotel was a huge success. The BV20 SD forgery detector eliminated forged banknotes entering the pub and also acted as a deterrent against individuals trying to pay with counterfeit notes, meaning both of Young’s success criteria were achieved.
Following completion of the trial, Young’s purchased the trial BV20 SD forgery detector, plus ordered a further three machines for three more Young’s sites and Volumatic are now on their approved suppliers list, meaning that any of their Operations Managers from any Young’s pub can place an order for a BV20 SD – or any other Volumatic solution – as and when required.
