The British Library is a major research library (one of the largest in the world) based in London and is the National Library of the United Kingdom, boasting nearly 200 million items, many with vast historical significance.

The Challenge

Established back in 1973, The British Library receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, with items in many languages and in many formats, both print and digital: books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, videos, play-scripts, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints and drawings.

While many items are display only or can only be viewed in the library itself, many other tems can be borrowed by the general public, like at every other library. The British Library charge a fee for items borrowed and fees for late returns, but daily manual cash counting was taking library employees away from spending time in other areas of the business, including customer service for those wanting to use the library for research purposes.

The Solution

Following some research on the leading cash handling providers available in the UK, The British Library contacted Volumatic. After looking at the solutions available to them, they chose to install a number of CountEasy IP money counting machines in their premises to not only help with basic cash counting each day, but also chose the integrated printer version (IP) so that they could easily get a print out for auditing purposes when required.
